1000 Lighters recycling project. 2016. 1000 plastic lighters were found on beaches and collected over several months in Cape Town, South Africa. During the period between 2006 and 2016 thousands of photos of plastic were taken on beaches or coastlines in several countries. The plastic was always removed from the beach. This was part of a website project called plasticbeaches.com: to both hightlight and involve the public in collecting plastic off beaches. The website launched in 2008. A collage of waste objects was contructed over several days, covered over at night with larger waste items, so that it wouldn’t be disturbed and the construction could continue.
Overlooking the site is a factory called Puertas Cubells who’s business has been manufacturing for close to 100 years.
